Murder Charge For South Jersey Man In Death Of Mother: Prosecutor

Sean Daly, of Mays Landing, is accused of killing his mother. He also tried to stab her to death in 2015, according to previous reports.

MAYS LANDING, NJ β€” An Atlantic County man previously indicted for trying to stab his mother to death has been charged with murder after she was found dead on Wednesday, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said.

Sean Daly, 53, was charged with murder and weapons offenses in connection with the death of his 74-year-old mother, Melba Daly, both of Mays Landing, authorities announced Thursday.

In 2015, Sean Daly was indicted after trying to stab his mother to death in her sleep, the Press of Atlantic City reported at the time. Online court records show that he pleaded guilty to attempted murder and aggravated assault and did jail time.

Shortly before noon on March 20, 2024, police responded to a home on the 6000 block of Quinn Avenue, where they found the body of Melba Daly, authorities said. A cause of death was not shared and no further information was immediately available.

Investigation led to the arrest of Sean Daly, who is currently in custody pending a detention hearing, police said.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office's Major Crimes Unit and the Hamilton Township Police Department are jointly investigating.
