Prosecutor's Office Investigating Death of Atlantic City Man While in Police Custody

The medical examiner ruled that the man died of natural causes.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the death of an Atlantic City man who died while in police custody Monday night, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced.

A 41-year-old Atlantic City man was arrested by police on a non-support warrant Monday morning. He was lodged in the holding area of the Atlantic City Police Department at approximately 10:50 a.m.

A routine check of the detainee by police at 10:14 p.m. resulted in the dispatch of emergency medical personnel to the scene, and subsequent transport of the man to the AtlantiCare Medical Center City Division, where he was later declared dead.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday morning determined that the cause of death was a massive upper-gastrointestinal tract bleed, and that the manner of death was natural.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, which is responsible for the investigation of all in-custody deaths in Atlantic County, responded to the scene Monday night and continues the on-going investigation of the death.
