Prosecutor's Office Investigating Police-Involved Shooting in Atlantic City

Three plain clothes detectives were involved in the incident, in which an Atlantic City man who allegedly had a handgun was shot.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating an incident in which an Atlantic City man was shot by a police officer Tuesday afternoon.

Three plain clothes Atlantic City Police Department detectives were involved in the confrontation with 20-year-old Shawn Brown, according to a preliminary investigation conducted by the Prosecutor’s Office.

Brown was allegedly armed with a semi-automatic handgun. The handgun was recovered at the scene.

Atlantic City Police responded to the area of Route 30 and Pennsylvania for reports of gunshot fire at 12:56 p.m.

Upon arrival, police encountered Shawn Brown, 20. During the subsequent shooting, officers shot Brown, who was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Division where he was pronounced dead.

Next-of-kin have been notified.

Detectives from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit were interviewing witnesses, processing the scene and collecting existing video of the incident.

An autopsy by the NJ State Medical Examiner’s Office is scheduled for Wednesday.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office independently investigates all police-involved shootings in the County, as mandated by New Jersey Attorney General Directive. Pursuant to policy, the Atlantic City Police Department is not involved in the investigation.
