Stockton, Atlantic Cape Announce Dual Degree Program

The colleges announced a dual degree program earlier this week.

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey issued the following statement regarding a dual-degree program with Atlantic Cape Community College this week:

A new dual degree program between The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and Atlantic Cape Community College provides a seamless transition for students interested in preparing for careers in medicine, dentistry, and veterinary, while reducing the cost of their educations.

Qualified students will earn an associate degree in Biomedical Science at Atlantic Cape and transfer to Stockton to earn a B.A. or B.S. in Biology with a concentration in Health Professions or Pre-Physical Therapy. Students can take advantage of the program’s “reverse transfer” provisions, which enable them to apply approved credits earned at Stockton to complete their Atlantic Cape degree requirements.

Biomedical science combines the fields of biology and medicine to focus on the health of humans and/or animals. Biomedical science majors study biochemical and physiological functions, anatomy, physiology, genetics, and cell and tissue structure.

“This dual degree agreement increases opportunities for students to enter the growing field of biomedical science,” said Stockton President Herman Saatkamp. “Students save on the cost of their bachelor’s degree by spending two years at Atlantic Cape, which offers excellent preparation for their distinctive Stockton educational experience. Given the worldwide and national growing needs in the area of health care, society benefits by having more trained professionals to prevent and treat diseases.”

“Atlantic Cape and Stockton have successfully collaborated to create innovative partnerships to benefit students in our region for many years. This program is another example of how we are creating opportunity for local residents to obtain an education that will position them for careers in in-demand fields,” said Dr. Peter L. Mora, Atlantic Cape president.

The degrees earned at both schools provide the necessary preparation for pursuing post-baccalaureate degrees in medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine. Courses may also be accepted upon application to graduate schools for Ph.D. degrees in the biomedical sciences.

Stockton’s Office of Academic Advising and the Health Professions advisor will provide guidance to Atlantic Cape Biomedical Science majors to help them transition to Stockton.

This new program expands on the dual degree program Stockton and Atlantic Cape have had in place since 2012. Students can earn an associate degree in arts or science from Atlantic Cape as well as their Stockton baccalaureate degree in other chosen fields of study.
