Stockton University Writing Series To Feature Author, Greek Trio This Fall

GALLOWAY, NJ — Stockton University in Galloway will continue its Stephen Dunn Visiting Writing Series this fall with two free public events at the Campus Center Theatre, including a reading by writer and graphic essayist Aubrey Hirsch and a performance by the Athens, Greece-based trio StarWound.

Hirsch, the author of “Graphic Rage: Comics on Gender, Justice, and Life as a Woman in America,” is scheduled to speak at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23. According to Stockton, Hirsch will read from her new book and answer questions from the audience.

Stockton said Hirsch’s essays and comics have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME Magazine and Vox, among other outlets. The university also said she has received a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in literature and an Individual Artist Award from The Sustainable Arts Foundation.

The second event in the fall series will feature StarWound, a pop-music and spoken-word trio based in Athens, Greece, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27. Stockton described the group’s sound as a fusion of EDM and synth rock and said the trio has performed at several European music festivals, including Eurosonic in the Netherlands, the CLAE Festival in Luxembourg and Colora in Belgium.

For its Stockton appearance, StarWound will perform “Interiors,” which Stockton described as an original piece that brings together music, poetry, dance and spoken word and explores the social perception of mental illness. According to Stockton, the group’s lyrics are collaborations with poets from the East Coast, including Stockton Professor of Creative Writing Cynthia Arrieu-King.

Both programs are free and open to the public, and both will take place in the Campus Center Theatre.

The series is named for the late Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Stephen Dunn, who was a distinguished professor emeritus of Creative Writing at Stockton. Stockton said the series is sponsored by Murphy Writing, the School of Arts and Humanities, the Noyes Arts Garage and the Literature program.

The Oct. 27 StarWound program is also co-sponsored by the Dean C. and Zoe Pappes Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies at Stockton.
