Why Was A Tractor Trailer On This NJ Boardwalk?

It’s safe to say that just about everyone who has ever been behind the wheel of a car has made a wrong turn, and what’s being reported here is no different. Except this story has a combination most other stories don't have: it involves a tractor trailer and a boardwalk.

At about 5:30 Wednesday morning, the driver of a tractor trailer made a wrong turn onto the boardwalk at Albany Avenue in Atlantic City, according to Ventnor City Police Chief Douglas Biagi. But then he just kept going, for 2.5 miles.

A Ventnor City police officer initially thought the truck was dumping material when he approached the driver, but soon learned what had happened.

“No, he just made a wrong turn,” Biagi told Patch Wednesday afternoon.

He kept going because there are no ramps for him to exit over that stretch of the boadwalk. He reached the end of the boardwalk in Ventnor before he realized there was no exit, Biagi said.

Once the officer realized what had happened, the Ventnor City Public Works Department was called to the scene. A four-hour job ensued in which the Public Works Department separated the cab from the trailer and then removed the smaller truck from the boardwalk.

The driver was cited for driving on the boardwalk. He wasn’t drunk or on drugs, Biagi said. No one was injured, and there was no obvious damage done to the boardwalk, but an engineer will check the scene more thoroughly, Biagi said.

Atlantic City police received a call that a tractor trailer was on the boardwalk, but it was gone before officers arrived, The Press of Atlantic City reports. The wrong turn was prompted by the driver's GPS, according to nj.com.
