$1M Project On Berlin-Cross Keys Road Starts Next Month

The project includes a complete reconstruction of the road, and Gloucester Township is partnering with the county to install a new light.

WINSLOW TOWNSHIP, NJ — Crews will begin a complete $1 million reconstruction project designed to dramatically improve drivability on Berlin-Cross Keys Road at the intersection with New Freedom Road in Winslow Township beginning in September, Camden County officials announced Tuesday morning.

Additionally, Gloucester Township is partnering with the county to install a new traffic light at the intersection of Berlin-Cross Keys Road and Kearsley Road, beginning later in the fall.

“Each year we survey the county and identify roadways, bridges and infrastructure in need of significant repairs or reinvestment,” Camden County Freeholder Susan Shin Angulo, liaison to the Department of Public Works, said. “There is no other investment we can make as an elected board that simultaneously benefits public safety, transportation, and economic activity.”

As part of the project, crews will also enlarge a stormwater basin near the intersection with New Brooklyn-Erial Road to handle the increase in stormwater runoff which will result from a future widening of the road, officials said.

“This infrastructure work is a harbinger of more investment into a significant county roadway in the future,” Shin-Angulo said. “Moving into the next construction season we are hopeful to fully reconstruct and widen five miles of Berlin-Cross Keys Road. Once construction permits are approved by the state, we will be releasing more information on the size and scope of the project.”

The county said it has received permits from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to widen Berlin-Cross Keys Road between the White Horse Pike and New Brooklyn-Erial Road. Once it is complete, the road will feature two lanes of travel in each direction, with a center turn lane. Construction will take place over the next five years and is not a component of the road reconstruction project beginning next month.

The timing of the project depends on the weather and is subject to change.
