2 Charged With Murder During Attempted Robbery In South Jersey

Danny Smith and Damian Sanchez were charged in connection with the murder of Jerry Mass.

Two men have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a Pennsauken man during an armed robbery, Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo and Pennsauken Police Chief John Coffey announced.

Danny Smith was charged with one count of first-degree felony murder, one count of first-degree armed robbery, one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and one count of second-degree certain persons not to have weapons in the death of 26-year-old Jerry Mass.

Damian Sanchez was charged with one count of first-degree felony murder and one count of first-degree conspiracy to commit robbery.

Witnesses told police they saw Smith standing outside the common doorway before he and Sanchez entered Mass’ apartment on the 7000 block of Stockton Avenue, Pennsauken. They shot Mass while they were attempting to rob him, then fled out of the apartment and into a car, police said.

Smith was arrested at his home without incident on Thursday, Sept. 21. He was remanded to Camden County Correctional Facility pending a pretrial detention hearing that was scheduled for Friday.

Sanchez was arrested in Camden by the US Marshals and remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility. Under the recent Criminal Justice Reform rules, the court may order they both be detained without bail or released with conditions.
