2 Gloucester Women Among 48 New Camden County Coronavirus Deaths
Camden County announced 48 coronavirus deaths that took place last month on Monday as nursing homes continue to lag behind in reporting.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Two Gloucester Township women — one in her 80s and one in her 90s — were among 48 new deaths related to new coronavirus announced in Camden County on Monday.
Although they were announced on Monday, the deaths took place over 19-day span last month, between April 12 and April 30, as the disconnect in reporting of cases and deaths by nursing homes to the state continues.
“I am heartbroken to learn of this overwhelming loss of life in our community that has occurred in recent weeks,” Camden County Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli Jr. said. “The deceased include 19 long-term care facility residents, as well as 29 additional Camden County residents. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this terrible disease, and we continue to wish all those who have contracted the virus a fast and full recovery.”

The number of deaths linked to nursing homes on Monday is 125 out of the county’s total of 186 coronavirus-related deaths, according to officials. The number of deaths linked to nursing homes remains the same as previously announced because reporting to the state and county health departments does not always occur at the same time, according to county officials.

The numbers don't always move in unison, and the deaths related to the nursing homes that were announced on Monday were likely already included in the number of deaths that were reported in county nursing homes overall.
Last week, nursing homes statewide reported their updated numbers after weeks of requests for the information and repeated warnings from the state to the owners and managers of long-term care facilities about their need to report that information to patients, employees and patients' families, Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said Monday.

Camden County officials also announced 105 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total to 3,542 cases with 86 fatalities in Camden County. Out of the total, 843 confirmed cases have been connected to the county’s 56 nursing homes.
The 48 deaths is the highest single-day total in Camden County, but the 105 new cases was only a slight increase after a steady decreases in new cases had been reported countywide. The single-day record for most new cases was 165 late last month.
“We have reached a difficult stage in this pandemic, one where the mixture of positive and negative developments can make it difficult to tell just how much progress we are making,” Cappelli said. “Rest assured, we are better off today than we were two months ago when this pandemic began. Testing is more accessible than it has been at any other point, our hospitals are not overwhelmed with patients, and we have been able to reopen our parks that sat closed for nearly a month. Our means for fighting this virus have not changed, and the importance of exercising them has only been heightened. Stay home unless you must go out, do not attend or organize social gatherings of any kind, and wear a mask or face cover while maintaining proper social distancing. Together, we will get through this, and we will be stronger for having done so.”
