GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — A major project to reconstruct the Somerdale Road Bridge in Gloucester Township is set to begin later this month, county commissioners said.

The $4.1 million project is funded through a Local Bridge Future Needs grant, administered by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Commissioners said the project is set to be completed in May 2024, and there will be an alternating traffic pattern in place while crews work on the project. The bridge is located approximately 1,300 feet northwest of Chews Landing Road and crosses the north branch of the Timber Creek in Gloucester Township.

“This project is another investment we are making to our county’s infrastructure to ensure it remains solid to provide for future generations,” said Commissioner Al Dyer, liaison to the Department of Public Works. “Reconstructing this bridge will allow motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to safely and efficiently traverse this span while they travel through this area.”

The county says more than $33 million worth of 2022 projects have been, or currently are, under construction. Another $22 million in projects are being designed for this year, the county said.

“The department of public works and engineering are working day and night to rebuild our highways and byways and this bridge reconstruction underscores the generational investment we are making in the county,” Dyer continued. “Part of what makes our county special is the ability and ease to get around it through our highway system. The revitalization and rebuilding of our roads will ensure that continues to be the case.”
