GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Six Gloucester Township residents were among 90 new confirmed cases of new coronavirus reported in Camden County on Sunday. The total number of coronavirus cases in Camden County as of Sunday was 3,437, with 138 deaths, according to county officials.

Out of the total number of cases, 843 cases have been connected to the county’s 56 nursing homes, according to the Camden County Department of Health. A total of 125 of the 138 deaths (91 percent) are related to nursing homes.

“At this current time I can see a glimmer of hope as our numbers have not had significant growth and have stayed relatively consistent. This may be a silver lining as we monitor test results, hospitalizations and our long-term care facilities,” Camden County Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr. said. “The reason for this hope is a direct testament to the residents of Camden County who have taken this threat seriously, as well as to the first responders, medical providers, and front line workers who have been continuing to go to work each day and keep the rest of us safe. Combatting this disease has been, and will continue to be, a team effort. We will break the back of this virus if we all commit to fulfilling our individual duties by staying home and following the governor’s orders.”

How It Spreads

The virus that causes COVID-19 is spreading from person-to-person. Someone who is actively sick with COVID-19 can spread the illness to others. That is why CDC recommends that these patients be isolated either in the hospital or at home (depending on how sick they are) until they are better and no longer pose a risk of infecting others.

There is currently no vaccine for COVID-19.

While the best way to prevent illness is to avoid virus exposure, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention always recommends taking preventive actions to contain the spread of viruses.
This includes:

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipes.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
