SICKLERVILLE, NJ — The former site of the nation's first Black-owned 18-hole golf course may become the future site of nearly 750 new homes.

According to an application filed with the Gloucester Township Zoning Board, US Home, LLC/Lennar submitted a proposal for 743 units on the former property of Freeway Golf Course (1858 Sicklerville Rd.).

The course, originally purchased by four Black businessmen, closed in 2015 after 48 years in business.

Among the notable events to be held on its grounds was the first "Sammy Davis, Jr. Open," a tournament hosted by the iconic entertainer and member of the "Rat Pack."

If approved, the new development will feature a combination of single-family homes, townhomes, designated "affordable" multi-family apartments, and age-restricted units.

Other improvements to recreational facilities, roads, and utilities will also be performed on the land.

The cell tower will remain in its location.

The land measures approximately 154 acres and is currently owned by Black Horse Properties, LLC, based in Blackwood.

The board was set to hear testimony regarding the proposal on Wednesday, but the meeting was cancelled due to a lack of quorum.

A new hearing date will be released by US Home, LLC, the Township said.
