Deptford Fire Department Welcomes Oak Valley Fire Company’s Newest Recruits

DEPTFORD - The community is gaining four new volunteer firefighters: Aiden Shephard, Danovan Nelson, Francisco Treminio, and Tom Tischner, all recent Firefighter I graduates from the Atlantic City and Camden County Fire Academies.

Each of them began their volunteer journey in the summer of 2025.

"Originally, I was interested in law enforcement but needed some more experience and decided to learn how different emergency service branches work with each other," said Shephard. "Once I began running fire calls, I fell in love with being able to directly help the community I grew up in, next to others who share the same passion."

Treminio also started with an interest in law enforcement but saw a sign and decided to give firefighting a try.

"Joining the fire department was the best decision I've made," said Treminio. "It's a bond like no other with my fellow recruits and members. I would trust them with my life."

Nelson shares the same sentiment.

"Everyone at the station is so welcoming," said Nelson. "I've always been shy, but volunteering has helped me step out of my shell. I love being part of the community events."

Although volunteers aren't paid, they receive many benefits.

"I wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't applied to volunteer," said Shephard. "Since I've joined, I've started a career as a 911 dispatcher and am privileged to be able to make a difference every day."

The Deptford Fire Department is always seeking more volunteers to help answer emergency calls, regardless of their background.

"No one is expected to know everything on day one. If you're willing to learn, work hard, and be part of the team, we'll provide the training, support, and mentorship you need to succeed," said Deptford Fire Department Captain Robert McDermott. "Every experienced firefighter started exactly where you are, and we'll be there to help you every step of the way."

Everyone is encouraged to grow and contribute at the fire station, and people often feel like it's a second family.

"Stop by the station," said Treminio. "You'll see how great everyone is and how bonded we are no matter our background."
