I Can Hear Again: Part 1
A doctor's mistake left me near death and headed into a 15-hour surgery. Part one of my story.
On Thanksgiving Day in the 1960s, about the time President Kennedy was assassinated, I was 7 years old. I had a lot of wax build up and my late parents took me to an ear doctor that we were told about.
Back in those days, no one looked at doctors' backgrounds like we do now. This doctor who was located in Long Island, NY at the time was cleaning my ear and he punctured my eardrum. We did not know he had 10 malpractice lawsuits against him. The poison in the eardrum went to my brain and my head was stuck on my left shoulder. My head went to the left and I could not move it.
My parents were horrified and very upset. I was rushed to a well-known hospital in Manhattan recommended by a close family friend. The only doctor that was there only operated on adults. He never operated on kids. He had no choice. He told my parents "I never saw anything like this. Alan is very very sick and his ear is totally damaged. If I do not operated on him right now, he will not see tomorrow. He is very close to death."

My parents were so scared. They did not want to lose their middle child. I was rushed into surgery. That lasted 15 hours straight. I was very close to death. It was touch and go. My parents waited and waited. Will I make it through? Will I pass away on the operating table?
Part two will be posted this coming week. Thank you all for reading my blogs. Feel free to leave comments.
