The Guns

I wrote this the day after Gabrielle Gifford was shot by Jared Lee Loughner on January 8, 2011.

I repeat it here to mark the killings at the Newtown, CT, elementary school.

I repeat it here to mark another massacre at Aurora Colorado.

Ditto Sikh Temple of Wisconsin.

WE NEED SERIOUS GUN CONTROL IN THIS COUNTRY.

I wrote this in the style and rhythm of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Bells."

The guns

Life exists at the edge with THE gun!

Wretched gun!

What a world of vitriol, their melody has begun!

how they ring out hate, hate, hate,

In the icy air of fate!

While the pistol shots are flashing,

All the victims shot are crashing,

to the shooter's ghoulish THRASHING,

RINGING OUT shot, AFTER shot, AFTER shot,

like a  RAT-A-TATA, RAT-A-TATA, TOT!

To thAT tin-TIn-Nabu-la-tion

that so rhy-thm-i-cally stuns,

From the guns, guns, guns, guns,

guns, guns, guns, guns, guns!

From the MAIMING  and the killing OF the guns!
