Gloucester Township, NJ – In an effort to expose students to the college environment, the faculty and staff at Camden County College is offering free, three-day Intro to College Workshops on the Blackwood and Camden campuses, the college announced on Monday.

The Intro to College Workshop runs Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting in the Taft Hall Presentation Room on the Blackwood campus.

The College also offers this workshop on the Camden campus for three consecutive Mondays on July 25, Aug. 1 and Aug. 8 in the Camden Technology Center.

“We felt it was important to provide this free service to the community while showcasing the warm and welcoming environment offered on campus,” Dr. James Canonica, Executive Dean of Enrollment and Student Services, said. “Our staff prepared a truly valuable experience that potential students will enjoy.”

The goal of the sessions is to teach high school juniors and seniors how to identify strengths within themselves so they can feel confident in college, according to the college.

They will also learn some of the real challenges they need to overcome to complete their degrees.

Participants will also learn about the importance of the college placement exam and how to prepare oneself to do well on the exam.

Once the exam is finished, students have to navigate financial aid and the cost of college while also choosing and understanding various academic programs. The workshop will cover all of these larger, student skills as well as the day-to-day tasks such as:

  • Reading a syllabus
  • Time management
  • Study and test-taking skills
  • Getting involved in campus activities

Workshop leaders will also give campus tours to show students all the important offices they need to find, but also to reveal the “hidden gems” of the college such as quiet study areas, open access computer labs, Starbucks, and other student amenities.

“To me, this is a great benefit in aiding students transitioning from high school,” Camden County College student Dan Eckhart said. “Having something that allows students a peek into college may go a long way to combat anxiety.”
