Driver Dies After Hitting Dump Truck On South Jersey Road: Police

A South Jersey man died after his car hit the back of a dump truck on a state highway last Thursday night, police said.

MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ — Police are piecing together what happened in a fatal crash in Monroe Township, after a Camden County driver hit the back of a dump truck.

According to Monroe Township Police, Thurman H. Smith Jr. of Chesilhurst was driving west on US 232 (Glassboro Road) on October 6. Smith was in a 2018 Kia Forte.

A 2017 Kenworth T880 tri-axle dump truck was also westbound on Route 232, police said.

As the vehicles approached CR 655 (Fries Mill Road), the front of Smith's Kia "made contact" with the back of the dump truck around 11:50 p.m.

The two vehicles came to rest in the westbound lane and shoulder of Glassboro Road, Monroe Township Police said.

Smith, 37, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, township police said.

The driver of the truck, an Atco man, has not been charged according to police. Investigators are looking into any contributing factors in the crash, police said.
