Driver Killed After Car Hits Tree In Gloucester Township: Police

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — One person was killed after their car crashed into a tree in Gloucester Township Thursday morning, police announced.

The crash happened in the area of East Landing Road off of Route 168 in the Blackwood section of the township just before 11 a.m., according to the Gloucester Township Police Department.

Arriving officers found the vehicle with significant front end damage and airbags deployed at rest against a large tree.

The driver of the vehicle was in and out of consciousness and appeared to be suffering from serious bodily injuries, police said.

AMR, Chews Landing Fire Department and Virtua Paramedics were called to the scene to rescue the driver and provide medical treatment, police said.

The driver, who was not identified by police, was taken to Cooper Medical Center, where they died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, police said.

During the initial phases of the investigation, East Landing Road was shut down for about two hours, police said.

Police remind drivers and passengers alike that the most effective thing they can do to protect themselves in a crash is to wear a seat belt.

“It can increase your chances of surviving a crash by as much as 75 percent,” police said in a statement. “In 2017 alone, it is estimated that 14,955 lives were saved by seat belts nationwide. Remember to buckle up, every time, every ride, regardless of seating position.”
