Shelter-in-place protocols typically require students and staff to remain inside their classrooms or offices while class and school programs continue as scheduled. The building's exterior doors are locked.

The incident happened after the school's dismissal time but during its after-school care program, according to online schedules.

Clementon Elementary School has about 600 students from Pre-K through eighth grade, according to public data.
