Holocaust Survivor From Camden Co. Featured In Film
"Rebuilt from Broken Glass" makes it debut Tuesday at the Congregation Beth El in Voorhees.
VOORHEES, NJ — A Voorhees man who is a Holocaust survivor and U.S. Army veteran is the subject of a documentary film premiering at the Congregation Beth El on Main Street in Voorhees Tuesday, the Camden County Commissioners said.
The film "Rebuilt from Broken Glass" shows how Fred Behrend escaped Germany during the Holocaust, made it to the United States, enlisted in its Army and ultimately reunited with a long-lost friend he last saw more than 80 years ago during the Nazi regime.
"Behrend is the human embodiment of resilience," Camden County Commissioner Melinda Kane said in a press release. "As a young man, his life was ripped away from him at the hands of pure evil, the Nazi Party. But Fred was not defeated and now his story of perseverance will live on forever through this film."

Kane also encouraged all to always remember those impacted by the "horrors of the Holocaust [and] celebrate those who are actively working to fight antisemitism through literature, film and other means.”
The showing of the documentary film starts at 7 p.m. Behrend and others, including Kane, are expected to attend the premiere.
