Man Bites Gloucester Township Officer In Leg: Police

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — A Gloucester Township man described as being in crisis punched two police officers and bit a third in the leg during an incident Monday night, police said on Tuesday.

Gloucester Township police and EMS were called to Brookshire Road shortly after 9 p.m. Monday night on a report of a man who was making threatening statements and threatening to kill police officers, according to the Gloucester Township Police Department.

However, police said the man had left the scene before they arrived. Shortly thereafter, they said they found him walking in the neighborhood. He appeared to be upset, and police attempted to de-escalate the situation by talking to him.

As this was happening, the mobile crisis team was contacted and told he should be taken to a local hospital for evaluation, police said.

Police said he initially wouldn’t cooperate with them, and refused to get off the ground. They were finally able to get him off the ground, but he began to pull away when they tried to handcuff him, police said. He was also cursing and threatening them, according to police.

A struggle ensued in which he punched two officers and bit a third in the upper leg, police said. Two body-worn cameras were also dislodged from the officers and were damaged, police said.

One officer suffered minor injuries, but the man in crisis wasn’t hurt, police said. He was taken to a local hospital for crisis evaluation.

He was charged with three counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, obstruction and harassment.
