Gloucester Twp. Co-Workers Help Employee Avoid Phone Scam: Police
Gloucester Township police remind residents that scammers may call posing as a member of law enforcement or federal agency.
GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — An employee at a Gloucester Township business was recently saved by their co-workers from becoming the victim of a potential phone scam, according to police.
The employee received a call at their desk from someone who claimed they were from the Salem County Sheriff’s Department, Gloucester Township police said.
The employee was told that a $2,000 warrant had been issued for their arrest because they didn’t show up for jury duty, police said.

The employee was about to go to get money to pay the warrant, but was stopped by some alert co-workers, police said.
They warned the potential victim that it may be a scam after they researched recent phone scams online.

Police remind residents that scammers may pretend to be from a law enforcement or a federal agency. They may tell you that you’ll be arrested, fined, or deported if you don’t pay taxes or some other debt right away.
“The goal is to scare you into paying,” police said. “Real law enforcement and federal agencies will not call and threaten you.”
