How To Get Your Free Tree Seedlings Around Gloucester Township

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Communities throughout the Gloucester Township area will give away five free tree seedlings to each interested state resident to celebrate Arbor Day.

The New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign assists communities in the restoration of the tree canopy damaged or destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.

To date, more than 500,000 trees have been distributed around New Jersey through this program. The New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign partners with the New Jersey Forest Service and Arbor Day Foundation.

Here's where you can pick up seedlings in the area:

• Cherry Hill: 2-4 p.m. April 30, Croft Farm Arts Center (100 Bortons Rd.)
• Collingswood: 9-11 a.m. April 29, Scottish Rite Auditorium parking lot (315 White Horse Pike)
• Merchantville: 9-11:30 a.m. April 29, bike path outside the station
• Washington Township: 9 a.m. to noon, May 7, Washington Lake Park, Greentree Road Entrance, parking lot "J"
• Waterford: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 22, Clementon Gun Club
• West Deptford: 9 a.m. to noon April 22, RiverWinds Community Center (100 RiverWinds Dr.)
• Winslow: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 6, Duble Senior Center

Six inches to 2-foot tall bare root seedlings in a bundle of five.

What do I need to bring?
Show up at the listed location on the designated date and time. No registration or identification required. Make sure to sign up if the municipality is requesting.

What if my town isn't listed?
Pick up trees at any pickup location — you don't need to be a resident of that town.

What kind of tree species will I receive?
Each location may have a variety of tree species, but there is no published list of species per location. Species are distributed based on what grows best in that area. Municipalities in the northern part of the state may receive persimmon or red oak trees, while towns in the south may receive Virginia pine or other species adapted to this region. Seedlings that are salt tolerant are distributed to shore towns may include bayberry or beach plum, shrubs commonly found on dunes and in other coastal environments.
