Intoxicated Driver From Gloucester Twp. Fatally Strikes Biker In Camden Co.: Police

The driver left the scene but later self-reported that she hit the biker, authorities said.

CAMDEN, NJ — An intoxicated driver from Gloucester Township fatally struck a biker on the highway and fled the scene early Sunday in Camden, authorities said.

Charlene Wingate, 60, of Blackwood, was also driving with a suspended license, according to State Police.

The crash was reported at 1:37 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 676 South.

Victor Owens, 39, of Bridgeton, was riding his bicycle in the left lane when Wingate struck the rear of his bike, police said. His injuries were fatal.

Wingate left the scene but later self-reported that she struck the cyclist, said Sgt. Charles Marchan, a State Police spokesperson.

It wasn't immediately clear how much time had passed between the crash and Wingate contacting police.

Wingate was charged with leaving the scene of a deadly crash, causing death or injury while driving with a suspended license, and driving under the influence.

She will remain jailed at the Camden County Correctional Facility, pending the results of a future detention hearing.

Wingate did not have a listed attorney in online court records on Monday.

The crash remains under investigation.
