Man's Death After Arrest Under Investigation In South Jersey: AG
The man became unresponsive the night that State Police took him into custody, authorities said.
BRIDGETON, NJ — The state attorney general's office is investigating the death of a man who became unresponsive on the night he was arrested in South Jersey, authorities announced Friday.
State Police arrested the man Saturday evening in Fairfield Township, Cumberland County, according to the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General. He had been charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
The man became unresponsive at about 8 p.m. Saturday at the New Jersey State Police agency's Bridgeton Station, according to the preliminary investigation. Troopers performed life-saving measures before officials transported him to Inspira Medical Center in Vineland, the AG's office said.

He died at 11:37 p.m. Sunday.
The AG's office hasn't publicly released the man's identity. The investigation is ongoing, and the state agency said it won't release any further information at this time.

A 2019 state directive requires the AG's office to conduct an independent investigation into any death that occurs during an encounter with law enforcement or while the decedent is in custody.
