Memorial Day Events Coming To Gloucester Township

The township will hold its annual Memorial Day commemorations on Monday, May 30.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Gloucester Township will host its annual Memorial Day service Monday, May 30, at 11 a.m. at Veterans Park, the municipality said.

The service will consist of several speeches and musical performances.

Veterans Park is one of nine locations within Gloucester Township where those who are serving or have served our country will be honored on Monday.

The other eight places and the times of their respective Memorial Day events are:

  • Blackwood VFW 7927 (8 a.m.)
  • Gloucester Township School (8:20 a.m.)
  • Church Street Monument (8:40 a.m.)
  • Glendora VFW Post 8714 (9 a.m.)
  • 9th Avenue Monument, Glendora (9:20 a.m.)
  • American Legion Post 281 (9:40 a.m.)
  • Gloucester Township Community Park (10 a.m.)
  • Erial Cemetery (10:15 a.m.)

The origins of what is now Memorial Day can be traced back to the end of the Civil War, according to history.com. Back then, the annual event that pays tribute to America's soldiers was known as Decoration Day, the website says.

The commemoration at the end of May became a federal holiday in 1971, history.com says.

Gloucester Township's Memorial Day festivities are one of the thousands — be it a parade,
family gathering, cemetery visit or similar event — that are expected around the United States this coming weekend.
