Non-Teachers Can Earn State Teaching Credentials in CCC Program
New Pathways option provides education for professionals who want to switch careers to become educators.

Anyone whose bachelor’s degree isn’t in education but now wants to be a teacher can change careers and change the lives of others through study in Camden County College’s New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey.
New Pathways allows those trained in other professions to acquire the qualifications necessary for them to change careers and become educators. It is a partnership with New Jersey City University in cooperation with the state Department of Education, the New Jersey Association of School Administrators and the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association.
Beginning in April, the New Pathways 24-Hour Pre-Service Program in K-12 Subject Matter will provide enrollees with the pedagogical training they need to apply for a state certificate of eligibility. The program consists of 20 hours of lessons, including “An Overview of the Teaching Profession”; “Classroom Management”; “Assessment Tools”; “Lesson Plans”; “Learning Strategies”; “Diversity in the Classroom”; and “The Implementation of Technology.” Also included are a four-hour classroom observation component and a workshop on job search strategies for teachers. The six-session program will run April 20 to June 1 and meet from 6 to 9:20 p.m. on the College’s Blackwood Campus. Cost is $275, which includes the textbook. Beginning in June is the one-year New Pathways Alternate Route to Teacher Education Program. This option consists of two stages -- a 45-hour portion that runs from June to September and a 140-hour portion that runs from September to June – and also may be completed for graduate school credit toward a master of arts in teaching degree from New Jersey City University. Alternate Route applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree with a grade-point average of 2.75 or higher, achieve a passing score on the appropriate Praxis II exam and have received a state certificate of eligibility.
