Reckless Driver Killed 2 In South Jersey Crash: Police

Nearly a year after the collision, a man was charged with 2 counts of death by auto.

VINELAND, NJ — A man was charged Wednesday for his role in a crash that killed two people last year in Vineland, police said.

Police accused Malexus Coleman of "recklessly" causing the deaths of Millville residents Gary Lawson, 76, and Diane Lindquist, 73. Coleman was charged with two counts of death by auto and two counts of violation of law intended to protect public health and safety.

Coleman, 27, of Vineland, was placed on a summons and released, pending a court hearing.

Authorities responded to the two-vehicle crash on the morning of Feb. 10, 2023 at South Delsea Drive and College Drive. Lawson and Lindquist, who both occupied a 2014 Ford Taurus, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Coleman was traveling southbound on South Delsea Drive when their 2019 Dodge Durango collided with the other vehicle, according to the preliminary investigation. The Taurus was moving northbound on the roadway, and Lawson was attempting to make a left turn onto College Drive, police said.

Lawson was "well-known and beloved" within several community theater groups and won an award for his role as Big Daddy in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," according to his obituary. For many years, he worked for the Wheaton Glass Co. in Millville before retiring as a master operator.
