New ShopRite Approved At Site Of Long-Vacant Kmart In Gloucester Twp.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — The Gloucester Township Planning Board approved a proposed ShopRite supermarket for the long-vacant Kmart building.

The future ShopRite will be part of Cherrywood Plaza, occupying the 98,914-square-foot building that once housed Kmart, which shuttered the location in 2017.

During Tuesday's meeting, the Planning Board also approved the proposed addition of a pad site for unspecified restaurant or retail use in the shopping center. The pad site will be 7,500 square feet.

Cherrywood Plaza is located at 1468 Blackwood-Clementon Road — less than a mile down the road from ShopRite of Laurel Hill. That location would close once the new ShopRite opens.

ShopRite of Cherrywood Plaza will occupy a larger site than the Laurel Hill store, allowing space for more products and the addition of online ordering for pickup and delivery, according to Zallie Family Markets. The company operates a dozen ShopRite stores, mostly throughout South Jersey.

It's uncertain when the future ShopRite may open. Patch's efforts to contact Zallie Family Markets were unsuccessful.

The proposal to the Planning Board came from Benderson Development, which owns Cherrywood Plaza properties throughout 40 states.
