Triton Baseball Team Plays For Sectional Title Friday

Triton advanced to the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 3 final with a win over Toms River East, according to nj.com.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — The Triton Regional High School baseball team will play for a sectional title on Friday.

The top-seeded Mustangs advanced to the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 3 final with a 6-5 win over No. 12 Toms River East in the semifinals on Tuesday, nj.com reports.

Triton will host No. 2 Cherry Hill West, an 11-2 winner over No. 6 Hammonton in the semifinals, on Friday, May 31. A time has not yet been set.

Colin Taylor’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning propelled Triton into the final, according to nj.com. Toms River East jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth, and tacked on one more in the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Nick Woods hit a two-run single and John Scarborough tied the game with a three-run homer in the same frame.

Triton brings a 20-3 record into the final. They opened the tournament with a mercy-rule, 10-0 win over No. 16 Central Regional in the first round, according to nj.com.

The next two wins were not as easy for the Mustangs. In the quarterfinals, Triton needed an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth from designated hitter Matt Woods to defeat No. 9 Pinelands, 1-0, according to nj.com. After that came Tuesday’s close call against Toms River East.
