Video Shows Police Dog Attacking South Jersey Man Before His Death

A blurry cell phone video released to NBC 10 shows the dog attacking Phillip White while he was on the ground.

A video taken on a cell phone by a witness and provided to NBC 10 shows Phillip White, 32, attacked by a police dog while in custody.

White later died.

The video shows White attacked by a police dog while he was face first on the street. Following the incident, an officer approaches the witness taking the video, asks for their information and says he’s going to confiscate the phone.

Vineland police officers encountered White while responding to a report of a disorderly person around the 100 block of Grape Street last Tuesday.

Shortly after the incident, officers reported White was in respiratory distress and they called for medical help. He had been handcuffed and restrained during the incident, according to Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McCrae.

White was taken to the hospital in an emergency vehicle with a police officer present. At some point while he was being transported, White became unresponsive, and medical personnel initiated CPR, the prosecutor said.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

On Monday, it remained unclear if an autopsy had been conducted, according to nj.com.

The Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office and New Jersey State Police are investigating the incident.

Vineland Police Chief Timothy P. Codispoti said his department is cooperating.
