Wildfire Smoke To Linger, But Camden Co. Blaze Mostly Contained
Smoke will likely be detectable in surrounding communities until there's significant rain. That could take a while.

WATERFORD, NJ — A wildfire in Camden County is mostly contained, but the smoke will impact surrounding communities until there's significant rainfall, officials said Tuesday.
The fire was detected Monday morning in Wharton State Forest — around Tremont Avenue and Burnt Mill Road in Waterford Township. Ninety percent of the 45-acre blaze has been contained as of 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.
No homes or buildings are at risk of damage, and all roads are open.

The cause of the wildfire is under investigation.
It was among several brush fires that burned Monday in Camden County, sending thin layers of smoke and a strong odor into communities throughout the region.

Smoke from the wildfire will likely impact surrounding communities until then, officials said. For the next several days, the Forest Fire Service will monitor the scene until the area gets significant precipitation.
A worsening drought left New Jersey with virtually no rain in October, making it the driest month in the state's recorded history, which goes back to 1895. The state issued a drought watch Oct. 17, urging people to voluntarily conserve water.
There could be widespread rainfall on Sunday, but the forecast remains uncertain, according to the National Weather Service's Mount Holly Office.
Wildfires have been prevalent throughout the region in recent weeks, with dry conditions quickening their spread. Stage 3 fire restrictions remained in place Tuesday for the entire state. All outdoor fires must be in elevated stoves that use only propane, gas, natural gas or electricity.
