Winning Ticket In South Jersey During $1.4B Powerball Drawing

It wasn't the historically large jackpot, but somebody in the region still earned a significant prize.

WILLIAMSTOWN, NJ — One of the largest jackpots in lottery history remained up for grabs after Wednesday's Powerball drawing. But a South Jersey participant earned some substantial winnings.

A ticket sold at Walmart (1840 South Black Horse Pike, Williamstown) generated $50,000 in the contest. The ticket matched four of the five white balls and the Power Ball for the third-tier prize.

The Powerball jackpot, meanwhile, reached an estimated jackpot of $1.4 billion for Saturday's drawing — the fourth-highest jackpot in U.S. lottery history.

The odds of winning Saturday's jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The eventual victor can opt for an annuity doled out over 30 years. But most lottery winners choose the lump-sum option, which currently stands at $643.7 million.

Lottery winnings are also subject to federal taxes. Many states, including New Jersey, also tax winnings.

The Powerball jackpot has ballooned for more than two months, with the prize resetting after somebody won the $1 billion jackpot July 19.

Powerball's next drawing is set for 10:59 p.m. Saturday. New Jersey participants must purchase tickets before 9:59 p.m. to qualify. View the rules here.

Powerball is played in 45 states, along with Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
