1. Smash-and-Grab Robbery at N.J. Mall Jewelry Store Prompts SWAT Response (instoremag.com) — A smash-and-grab robbery at Bloomingdale's in The Shops at Riverside in Hackensack sparked a large SWAT and police response after shoppers mistook shattering glass for gunfire. No one was hurt, but the thief escaped with jewelry, adding Hackensack's upscale mall to a growing list of New Jersey daytime jewelry heists authorities are still investigating.
2. RFH Student-Athlete Nominated for Football Award (rumsonfairhavenretrospect.com) — A Hackensack High School athlete, Jason Bocio, is among the nominees for USA Football's Heart of a Giant Award, which honors high school players and team members for character, resilience, and dedication. Local fans can vote online through Oct. 11, helping determine which nominee advances as a finalist and potentially brings thousands of dollars in equipment grants back to their school.
3. New Jersey behavioral health provider files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy (beckersbehavioralhealth.com) — Hackensack-based Comprehensive Behavioral Health Care has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after years of disputes over its Salem Street facility, mounting legal costs, and building failures. The nonprofit, which runs 20 sites and employs about 350 people, aims to keep serving vulnerable residents while it restructures debt, fights eviction, and seeks court approval to keep using cash for operations and payroll.
4. Ex-Garfield Police Sgt. is Arrested for Multiple Paintball Shootings, Including in Hasbrouck Heights and Lodi (tapinto.net) — Bergen County prosecutors say a former Garfield police sergeant has been arrested in connection with a string of paintball shootings that damaged vehicles and injured one driver across several towns.
