HACKETTSTOWN, NJ — A Hackettstown High School student was recognized in the 2026 Congressional Art Competition for New Jersey’s 7th District, Congressman Tom Kean Jr. announced this week.
Nathan Veillard of Hackettstown earned an honorable mention for his artwork, “Stars, Stripes, and Stories,” created as part of this year’s contest theme, “Celebrating America’s 250 Years.”
The annual Congressional Art Competition highlights student artists from across the district, with winners selected based on artistic skill, originality, design and visual appeal.
Kean said the competition showcases the creativity and talent of young artists throughout the district.
“Each year, the Congressional Art Competition highlights the next generation of artists,” Kean said in a statement. “Our district’s winners brought the spirit of our nation’s 250th anniversary to life through their artwork, and I am proud to help showcase their talent on a national stage.”
This year’s first-place winner was Kaylie Gao of Warren, whose painting “Allegiance” will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. Two runners-up, Vivien Xu of Westfield and Mia Li of Warren, will have their artwork displayed in Kean’s congressional offices in New Jersey and Washington, D.C.
Veillard was among several students from across the district to receive honorable mention recognition. Other honorees included students from Bridgewater, Warren, Mendham and Branchburg.
The competition was judged by professional art educators Colleen Furnari, an art teacher at the Midland School in Branchburg, and Catherine Benton, a Warren County art educator and chair for the Art Educators of New Jersey.
The Congressional Art Competition is held annually nationwide to recognize and encourage artistic talent among high school students.
