Hackettstown PD Launches Memorial Day Weekend Traffic Enforcement

The multi-agency effort targets aggressive, impaired, and distracted driving as NJ enters the "100 Deadliest Days of Summer."

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ — The Hackettstown Police Department, in coordination with eight partner agencies, will conduct targeted high-visibility traffic enforcement throughout the Memorial Day holiday weekend in an effort to reduce crashes during one of the busiest and most dangerous travel periods of the year.

Participating departments include the Roxbury Township, Washington Township, Mount Olive Township, Chester Township, and Byram Township police departments, as well as the Stanhope and Netcong police departments and the Morris County Sheriff's Office.

Enforcement efforts will focus on aggressive driving, speeding, distracted driving, and driving while intoxicated.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Memorial Day weekend historically averages approximately 449 traffic fatalities — a 10% increase compared to non-holiday weekends. Approximately 40% of those fatal crashes involve alcohol-impaired drivers.

In New Jersey, the stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day is commonly referred to as the "100 Deadliest Days of Summer," when fatal crashes, alcohol-related incidents, and young driver crashes occur at significantly higher rates due to increased travel and recreational activity.
