HACKETTSTOWN, NJ — If apple picking is on your fall checklist, there are several options around Hackettstown to fill a bag right from the orchard.
In nearby Long Valley, Ort Farms at 25 Bartley Road offers pick-your-own apples, with more than 5 acres of apple trees. The farm grows several varieties, including Gala, Honeycrisp, Jonagold and Cortland, and its pick-your-own fields are open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Visitors should check the farm's social media for current picking conditions before heading out.
Over in Belvidere, Mackey's Orchard at 284 County Road 519 offers pick-your-own apples on weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The orchard says pick-your-own apples are sold by the bag, with a half-bushel bag priced at $35 and a peck bag at $20.
Mackey's Orchard cautions that apple picking will be very limited this year because of an April freeze and recommends calling or checking its social media for the latest updates.
Another local option is Race Farm at 87 Belcher Road in Blairstown. The farm offers pick-your-own apples and says visitors can check its current picking information for available varieties before making the trip.
Race Farm offers a variety of fruits and vegetables for picking throughout the growing season, though available crops can change from week to week. The farm does not charge an admission fee and offers free hayrides on fall weekends, along with a picnic area for visitors who want to bring their own food.
