Hackettstown Police Promote Safe Driving Initiative
'Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day' returns on Oct. 10.

The Hackettstown Police Department is joining other state and national agencies in promoting "Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day" on Oct. 10.
The national initiative is designed to promote safe driving and awareness to traffic laws and to keep the roadways fatality free for one day. New Jersey has not had a fatality the past two years of the initiative.
There were 589 deaths—down from 627 in 2011—associated with motor vehicle crashes last year in New Jersey. In 2010, there were the least motor vehicle deaths in the state since the 1940s.
"Clearly, this effort will go a long way in our continuing efforts to stem the tide of tragedies that occur every day on New Jersey’s roadways,” Hackettstown Sgt. Darren Tynan said. “Shining the spotlight on this one day can help create a groundswell of support for good driving behaviors that can carry over throughout the year.”
“Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day not only raises awareness about the individual responsibility we have for our driving behaviors, but also engages drivers in making positive changes behind-the-wheel every day of the year,” Tynan added.
