Suicide Awareness Walk Set for St. Luke's in Long Valley Sunday

More than $2,000 already raised by local participants.

The effort to bring prevention and awareness to suicide has grown dramatically in recent years, as loved ones continue to walk and raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Now, an Out of the Darkness walk is coming to Long Valley, and anyone may join.

The event is set for Sunday, Oct. 12 from 1 to 3 p.m. at St. Luke’s Parish on West Mill Road.

“Our organization is based on educating the community and holding fundraisers in order to fund research that focuses on preventing suicide, increasing awareness of mental health, improving avenues for people to get the proper help they need, and reducing stigma through out our communities,” said Ashley Morolla, president of AFSP’s Northern New Jersey chapter, in a statement.

According to the local walk’s donation page, where participants can also register, there are 17 current team members taking part in Sunday’s event who have raised $2,065. Registration ends at noon on Friday, Oct. 10, but donations will be accepted through midnight on Jan. 1, 2015.
