5K brings alumni, students and parents together to support Paul VI

Paul VI alumni, students and parents participated in the Blue and White 5K on October 22 to support student scholarships.

Alumni, students, parents and coaches put their best foot forward in Paul VI’s Annual Blue and White Alumni Run and Walk. This 5k, sponsored by the Paul VI Alumni Association and the Boys Cross Country Team, was held at Pennypacker Park, Haddonfield on October 22nd. The event supports student scholarships through Paul VI’s Annual Giving Campaign. It also provides a great opportunity for alumni and students to connect and enjoy a fun run and walk in the park. Despite the fact that was a chilly and wet morning, runners showed up in numbers and enjoyed the run.

Participants included alumni from each decade of the school’s existence. Frank Ryan, class of ’71 held the distinction of being the male runner from the earliest graduating year. "I'm not sure what took a greater toll...trying to dance to the 70's sounds at the Blue and White Gala and Hall of Fame dinner or running the Alumni 5K. Both were two very different and fun ways to celebrate PVI." he said.

Kristen Brogan, class of ’82, was counterpart as the female from the earliest graduating class. Brogan also earned the Silver Award for female alumni. She said, “I began participating two years ago as a mom by bringing snacks; my son, Jack, is a current student on the cross country team. Last year I thought it would be nice to run, so I started training, and here I am again this year. It was a great day!” Brogan also finished 2ndin the female alumna category, for the second year in row!

Helene Usher, age 11, received the award for 1st place runner under age 12, and 2nd place female runner overall. She is the daughter of alumna Helene (McGovern) Usher, Class of ’92, a top runner and captain of the Paul VI Girls XC Team and all parochial champion in high school, as well as the assistant girls cross country coach to Coach Lyons from 2001-2008. She said, ”My daughter Helene very determined in just about everything she does; and she loves to run.” It looks as though we have a future cross country champion in our mist!

The Boys Cross Country Team parents generously provided snacks and pitched in to help make this a great day. Alumni participants, families and the cross country team met for lunch at Mulligan’s in Oaklyn for a “dine & donate” following the race.
