Boy, 16, Charged With Murder After 2 Shot, 1 Killed In Camden: Prosecutor

Detectives are working to identify a 2nd suspect involved in the homicide, authorities said.

CAMDEN, NJ — A 16-year-old boy was charged with murder in connection with a shooting in Camden, authorities said Thursday.

The charges stem from a mid-August incident at an apartment building where two men were shot, including one who succumbed to his injuries, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office (CCPO).

A 16-year-old male was charged with murder (first-degree) and weapons offenses. A fugitive task force of the U.S. Marshals Service apprehended him Tuesday in Camden. He's being held at the Lakeland Juvenile Detention Center.

Detectives are seeking assistance in identifying a second suspect involved in the homicide, authorities said.

In the early morning of Aug. 15, Camden County police responded to the Northgate 1 apartment building lobby for reports of two people shot at the location. Arriving officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds, the CCPO said.

Both victims were taken to Cooper University Hospital, authorities said. One victim — Quashawn Smith, 21, of Camden — was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m. in the hospital, according to the CCPO. The other individual, whose wounds weren't fatal, was a 20-year-old West Deptford resident, the agency said.
