Camden County Police Receive Grant to Increase Force By 15

The grant is for more than $3.2 million, the Courier Post reports.

The Camden County Police Department will receive a grant totaling over $3.2 million to hire 15 new officers, the Courier Post reports.

The grant is part of an overall effort to hire 87 additional officers throughout the state, according to the report.

Earlier in the day, Gov. Chris Christie reported that the police force has already increased from 160 to 376 following the replacement of the citywide force with a county-wide force. With another class of cadets already in training, the force will increase to over 400 officers.

Two years after Camden had its most violent year in history, homicides are down 50 percent, Christie said. There’s also bee a 49 percent reduction in reported rapes and a 25 percent reduction in robberies. Violent crime is down 22 percent overall, and non-violent crime is down 31 percent.
