Camden County Prepared for Sunday Night Storm

Icy conditions are expected to impact the morning commute.

Camden County is prepared for a storm that threatens to impact Monday morning traffic.

Preparations have been underway throughout the weekend to respond to the icy conditions and keep traffic moving, the Camden County Board of Chosen Freeholders said Sunday afternoon.

“Our public works employees are pretreating roadways in advance of tonight’s precipitation and will continue on the job to inhibit a refreezetomorrow,” Camden County Freeholder Ian Leonard, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works, said. “We will continue to keep an eye on roadway conditions and will address any and all situations that may arise during the transition from snow to freezing rain.”

While flurries and light snow were expected to begin falling Sunday evening, significant snowfall was not expected until 10 p.m.

Snow is expected to change over to a wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain and plain rain and lead to icy conditions that will impact the morning commute. Icy spots are expected to linger on the cold ground, even as the temperature rises.

At the public works complex in Lindenwold, more than 90 pieces of equipment stand ready to keep county roadways passable and motorists moving. If the weather becomes treacherous personnel will be dispatched to 12 winter maintenance districts to address salt and plow 1,200 lane miles of roadways across Camden County. The county’s response plan calls for crews to be dispatched only to the zones where they are needed.

“As always, when the weather turns hazardous we recommend that motorists remain cautious and give themselves extra time to reach their destinations,” Leonard said. “Anyone on the roadways during these times should be prepared to encounter slick or icy road conditions. Remember to leave at least six car lengths behind our DPW vehicles while they work.”

In the event that the weather causes isolated power outages, please remember to immediately call your utility company so they can identify the location and coordinate crews to restore your power. This storm has the potential to bring down trees and power lines residents need to be extra cognizant of any power failures.
