Haddonfield Commissioners Vie for Pedestrian Safety Grant

A resolution was required to begin the grant bidding process for pedestrian infrastructure improvements.

The borough Board of Commissioners approved a resolution Tuesday to support the national Safe Routes to School Program, part of a grant application process that could net up to $600,000 in state funds.

Borough Administrator Sharon McCullough said the potential aid could go to infrastructure improvements that make it easier for Haddonfield children to commute to school on foot or by bicycle. To that effect, sidewalk and curb cuts, road striping, and traffic calming measures on Euclid and Grove Streets would be some of the priority applications for any money brought in by the grant.

Past grant awards through the program have provided the state Department of Transportation funds that built the Lincoln Avenue speed tables outside the Middle and Central schools.

Other approved resolutions include:

  • Naming Henry D. Bean and Sons, Inc. as its 2012 Risk Management Consultant for the Camden County Municipal Joint Insurance Fund. The firm will receive a 6% minimum fee for its work, and the job was not bid out because the body deemed “the nature of Risk Management Consultant’s duties renders competitive bidding impractical.”
  • Appointing the following individuals to its board commissions until May 2016: Doug McCollister – Planning Board, Vice-Chair; Toni Bonnette – Historic Preservation Commission; Linda Harrington – Emergency Management Coordinator.
  • Appointing Rosanne Tizzano, Deena Gersh, and Sean Leonard to serve on the District Management Corporation until May 2015.
  • Awarding a contract to Independent Animal Control Services of Lindenwold to provide animal control services to the borough and extending its $1200 annual agreement with The Animal Orphanage of Voorhees to house and care for stray domestic animals captured within the borough limits.
  • Establishing its 2012 schedule of meetings.
