Flag Stirs Up Controversy During Haddonfield Independence Day Parade
A Georgia flag with the stars and bars associated with the Confederate flag carried in the parade is stirring controversy, njpen reports.
HADDONFIELD, NJ — A flag carried by a group of Right to Life demonstrators in Haddonfield’s Independence Day Parade is stirring up controversy in the borough.
The group maintains that the flag it carried in the parade on Monday is the state flag of Georgia, but a concerned resident says the flag was approved by that state’s legislature in 1956 to maintain the status of segregation in Georgia, njpen.com reports.
The flag features the stars and bars that symbolized the Confederacy during the Civil War on the right, and the seal of the State of Georgia on the left. An image of the flag, courtesy Wikimedia Commons, is attached to this post.

That flag was retired in 2001, and Georgia redesigned its flag in 2003, according to the report. Concerned resident Margo Kaplan says the group may not know the flag is outdated, and said she would be happy to pay for an updated flag for the unidentified group, according to the report.
It’s not the first time the group has marched with the flag in the parade, but parade organizers told the site they are unsure how to handle the issue.
