Haddonfield Girls Tennis Looks to Win S.J. Championship Monday

Also in sports, Haddonfield football gets its first loss and Haddon Township football gets its first win.

The Haddonfield High School girls’ tennis team will play for a South Jersey championship against Middle Township on Monday. The top-seeded Bulldogs had no trouble dispatching its first two opponents.

No. 1 Haddonfield shut out No. 8 Haddon Heights in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 2 playoffs, according to nj.com.

The three singles players cruised without giving up a point. First singles player Victoria Martinez picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sione Jones, while Amanda Lanciano defeated Megan Bleidorn, 6-0, 6-0 at second singles.

Erica Pascocello picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Emilee VanFossen, 6-0, 6-0.

Holly Hoover and Sarah Smith cruised at first doubles, defeating Kelsey Gesner and Jessie Troppello, 6-2, 6-2. The second doubles duo of Lizzy Benedict and Kelly MacCluen defeated Brielle Andrews and Sydney Kaczrowski, 6-1, 6-0.

On Thursday, the Bulldogs shut out No. 4 Woodstown, 5-0, to advance to the South Jersey final. In the semifinal, each of the three singles players and the first doubles team didn’t surrender a point.

Martinez defeated Jessie Walker, 6-0, 6-0; Lanciano defeated Corrine Hoopes, 6-0, 6-0; and Pascocello defeated Danielle Smick, 6-0, 6-0.

The first doubles team of Chelsea Brown and Arpie Senopolous shut out Candace Corsey and Taylor Dodge, 6-0, 6-0. At second doubles, Kade Burns and Katie Pileggi defeated Gabrielle Bonowski and Paige Schultz, 6-2, 6-1.

Haddonfield is 24-1 this season.

No. 2 Middle Township advanced to the final with wins over West Deptford and Collingswood, both by scores of 4-1.

Martinez also advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles tournament before falling to No. 1 seed Joanna Zalewski, of Linden.

She received a first-round bye.

In the second round, she eliminated Pingry’s Jacquie Jakimowicz, 6-1, 6-0.

In the third round, she ousted Cherokee’s Ameha Ying, 6-4, 6-2.

In the fourth round, she defeated  Manalapan’s Keren Khromchenko, 6-0, 6-0.

In the quarterfinals, she fell to Zalewski, 6-2, 6-3.

The doubles team of Chelsea Brown and Aprie Senopoulos also fell in the quarterfinals. Senopoulos won the state doubles title last year, and Haddonfield was seeking its third straight state doubles championship.

They received a first-round bye.

In the second round, they defeated Julie Rosen and Julianna Bidic, of Bishop Eustace, 6-2, 6-3.

In the third round, they defeated Lyndsey Stewart and Jesse Rachelle, of Bridgewater-Raritan, 6-2, 6-3.

In the quarterfinals, they fell to Millburn’s Anna Zakusilo and Sydney Zirlin, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Football

Haddonfield dropped its first game of the season Friday night, falling to Sterling, 13-0, according to nj.com.

The Bulldogs are now 3-1 this season, and will look to rebound when the host Overbrook on Friday night, 7 p.m.

Sterling (4-0) remained undefeated by scoring twice in the first half on two runs of 60 or more yards by Devon Tucker. Tucker put Sterling on the board in the first quarter with a 60-yard-touchdown run. His 63-yard run in the second quarter put Sterling up, 13-0.

Neither team scored in the second half.

HADDON TOWNSHIP 27, GATEWAY 8: Haddon Township picked up its first win of the season behind three touchdown passes from Robert McCullough.

McCullough put Haddon Township on the board first, with a 62-yard pass to Eric DiCrescenzo in the first quarter. He passed for two more scores, one for 26 yards in the second quarter and one for 15 yards in the third.

Haddon Township went up 27-0 before Gateway scored on a touchdown run and a safety in the second quarter.

Haddon Township is now 1-3, and hosts Woodbury on Saturday.
