Intoxicated, Unlicensed Driver Hits Pedestrian With Commercial Van In South Jersey: Police

The pedestrian was flown to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

VINELAND, NJ — A man sustained life-threatening injuries after an intoxicated, unlicensed driver struck him with a commercial van Thursday night in Vineland, authorities said.

Gurmeet Singh, 51, of Vineland, was flown to Cooper University Hospital, where he's listed in critical condition, police said Friday morning. Investigators found that the driver, Richard Earl III, drove under the influence of alcohol and had open containers when his van hit Singh.

Earl, 40, of Vineland, was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, possession of open alcohol containers in a motor vehicle, consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle, and operating a vehicle while unlicensed.

Vineland police responded to the crash at about 7:20 p.m. on North Main Road and East Landis Avenue. Their investigation found that Singh crossed over North Main Road in Earl's lane of travel when Earl struck the victim with his 2013 Ford (ServPro) Transit van.
