Man, 75, Fatally Struck Next To Disabled SUV In South Jersey: Police

A driver struck him as he stood next to a disabled vehicle on a rural roadway, authorities said.

DEERFIELD, NJ — A driver fatally struck a man who was standing next to a disabled vehicle on a rural roadway Thursday evening in Cumberland County, authorities said.

It happened at 6:35 p.m. on Big Oak Road in Deerfield Township. Marvin Saunders, 75, of Buena, was standing next to a disabled Nissan Pathfinder in the eastbound lane. A Ford F-150 struck both Saunders and the Nissan while traveling eastbound, according to State Police.

Saunders sustained deadly injuries, police said. No one else was hurt.

The crash remains under investigation as of Friday morning.

Big Oak Road has only one lane in each direction. Much of the rural roadway lacks sidewalks and is surrounded by grass and farmland.
