Man Accused of Kidnapping, Sexual Assault in 3 States Captured in New Jersey

Jose C. Amaya-Vasquez is believed to be from Honduras, and living in America illegally.

A Kansas City man believed to be living in America illegally allegedly kidnapped his 27-year-old girlfriend and sexually assaulted her in Missouri, Ohio and New Jersey, in the presence of their 2-year-old daughter.

Jose C. Amaya-Vasquez, 30, of Kansas City, Mo., was charged with kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, terroristic threats and resisting arrest.

He was captured in Bellmawr, Camden County, early Tuesday morning, after detectives in Kansas City used cell phone evidence to determine he was at the Super 8 Motel on the 300 block of the South Black Horse Pike.

Investigators believe Amaya-Vasquez was passing through New Jersey on the way to New York with the victim and their child, Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo and Bellmawr Police Chief William Walsh said.

Kansas City Police contacted Bellmawr Police, who then reported to the scene.

When Bellmawr Police responded to the motel, the victim opened the door and told police that Amaya-Vasquez escaped through the tile ceiling.

Police then chased Amaya-Vasquez into a wooded area, where he allegedly attempted to climb a tree before being captured.

He is being held at the Camden County Jail in lieu of $400,000 bail.

Amaya-Vasquez is believed to be from Honduras and living in America illegally. Authorities have notified U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
