Officer Kills Man Armed With Knife While Investigating Burglary: Authorities

The attorney general's office is investigating the shooting, which occurred at an apartment complex in the Westmont area, authorities said.

HADDON TOWNSHIP, NJ — A Haddon Township officer shot and killed a man, who was armed with a knife, while responding to an attempted burglary early Sunday, according to the state attorney general’s office.

In accordance with New Jersey law, the office of Attorney General Matthew Platkin is investigating the shooting, which occurred at an apartment complex in the Westmont area, authorities said, noting the identities of the officer and the man are being withheld.

Police responded shortly after 1 a.m. to a 911 call about an attempted burglary in progress on West Crystal Lake Avenue, according to a news release from Platkin’s office. Shortly after they arrived, the officers encountered the man in a stairwell with a knife, according to the news release.

“During an interaction in the stairwell, an officer fired his service weapon, striking the male,” the news release said.

The man was taken to Cooper University Hospital and pronounced dead about an hour later, according to the news release.
